If walls could talk; The Limelight in Chelsea, designed by Richard Upjohn, has been a neighborhood icon since 1844. The space has been used for everything ranging from a place of worship, a drug rehabilitation center, a storied nightclub, a market and most recently a fitness center. The buildings landmark status paired but its cavernous and dark interior has made Limelight’s rebirths difficult to stick. When approached by the new owners and asked about its next life, we used the opportunity to design a flagship incubator space that looks to celebrate the historic and storied structure while transforming its identity to adapt to the blending of hospitality and commercial environments.
